Fall
Fall is the West's quiet reward. The heat breaks, the crowds thin, and at elevation the aspens go gold in a rush that runs downhill from the high country through late September and October — whole mountainsides turning at once, then bare. The red rock reads warmer against a low sun, cottonwoods flare yellow in the canyon bottoms, and the hiking finally feels easy. It is the season locals wait for, and the one to plan a trip around.
