The Colorado Plateau kept its dinosaurs unusually well, and Utah sits near the center of the record. In the Jurassic mudstones of the Morrison Formation whole assemblages turned to stone — nowhere more densely than the Cleveland-Lloyd quarry, where thousands of jumbled bones, most of them Allosaurus, still puzzle the people digging them out. Farther east, a cliff face at Dinosaur National Monument keeps its skeletons in place, half-freed from the rock. You come not to a museum but to the ground itself.
