Every winter Yellowstone's bison walk down the valley to Gardiner, and Montana's cattle law meets them at the park line. A quarantine program now sends some of them on to the Fort Peck Reservation instead of to slaughter.

The Last of the Buffalo Outfit

In 1886 the Smithsonian sent its chief taxidermist to eastern Montana to shoot some of the last wild bison before there were none. He came home a conservationist, and the six he mounted are back in Montana.

Jeannette Rankin of Missoula was the first woman elected to Congress, and the only member to vote against American entry into both world wars. Each vote ended a career; she cast both.
