US Submarine Veterans Memorial
Bluffdale, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected, 1997
They called it the Silent Service, and it paid a silent, terrible price. American submariners made up a tiny fraction of the Navy in World War II, yet they sank more than half of Japan's merchant fleet and much of its navy — and suffered the highest loss rate of any U.S. branch in the war. Fifty-two boats never came home; their crews are said to be "still on patrol." This memorial in Bluffdale's veterans park keeps the phrase, and the men, from slipping under for good.
