Stone Bridge
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
The stone bridge arching over City Creek is where Memory Grove changes character. Below it the park is all clipped lawn, paved paths, and white monuments; cross it and the canyon goes wild—the unpaved Freedom Trail, the off-leash dogs, the creek loud over rocks. It's a small piece of landscape architecture doing quiet work: the seam between a city's idea of a memorial and the mountain that was here first. Most people walk over it without a glance, which is rather the point of a good bridge.
