Freedom Trail Monuments
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA
In the spring of 1983, a freak warm spell sent City Creek roaring out of its channel, and Memory Grove drowned in mud and gravel—fountains buried, monuments swept off, an entryway column undermined until it had to be torn down. What saved the place was people: volunteers who showed up to dig it out. In 1984 the city dedicated the Freedom Trail, the unpaved path running up the canyon above the lawns, to that spirit of volunteerism. It's the rare memorial a park raises to its own survival.
