Horizon Grove
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
By the mid-1970s Memory Grove had slid into neglect—Harbor Lake polluted, the chapel locked against vandals, the lawns gone to weed. The rescue came wrapped in the nation's Bicentennial: the Utah American Revolution Bicentennial Commission's Horizon Committee adopted the park as a centerpiece, rallied volunteers for a cleanup called "Sunday in the Grove," and replanted the canyon over the next several years. Horizon Grove carries that committee's name and that moment's optimism—proof that a park, like a memory, has to be tended or it's lost.
