Western Hotel

Fire took the first one. The wooden Western Hotel burned on 9 January 1875, starting in the lamp room in the middle of the afternoon, and three guests died in it. William Land, who had bought the place four years earlier, put up a second Western on the same ground inside the year and made it one of the largest hotels in the West. That one came down in the 1960s with much of the block. Land's name is on the city's biggest park now. The corner is a parking lot.
