D. O. Mills Bank Building

Twenty-one metres from where Adams and Company collapsed, this one held. Darius Ogden Mills came out in 1849, opened a store, and moved into banking because miners needed somewhere to put gold dust. His house went up in 1852 and stood through the panic that took its neighbour three years later. It outlasted the rush by three generations, merged in 1925, and closed in 1933 with every depositor paid. Neither outcome is marked on this ground.
