Adams and Company Building

Sacramento, Sacramento County · California

Adams and Company ran express and banking out of this building for two years and then went under in a week. Its own banker, Page, Bacon and Company, had overextended financing a Missouri railway and closed in January 1855. The news took five weeks to cross the continent by steamer, and when it landed the runs began. Small depositors lost their savings up and down the state. The building has outlived the company by a hundred and seventy years and carries nothing that says so.
