Toquerville Veterans Memorial

Toquerville, Washington County · Utah
Erected, 2007

Read the names and you read the town. This memorial gathers the people of small Toquerville who served in the wars of the last century, and the same surnames repeat down the columns — Bringhurst, Naegle, Slack, Spilsbury, Kleinman — whole families sending sons, sometimes half a dozen from one household. A place this size measures a war differently than a city does; here the fallen and the returned were cousins and neighbors, known to everyone. The memorial, dedicated in 2007, keeps their names together in stone the way the town held them in memory.
