Toquerville Jail Rock
Toquerville, Washington County · Utah
Erected by NA
Early Toquerville never built a jail — it had a rock. Transgressors in the young settlement were chained to this boulder in the open; it was the community's only means of confinement. The arrangement probably worked less by iron than by embarrassment, since everyone in a village this small walked past. The stone outlasted the practice by a century and eventually collected a plaque where it once held prisoners — pioneer justice reduced to its plainest possible furniture.
