The Archibald Borden House
Prairie Grove, Washington County · Arkansas
The fight around the Borden house is easiest to follow through one captured battery. Captain William Blocher's Arkansas Battery stood near the house, and the 20th Wisconsin and 19th Iowa crossed the valley fields and took the guns before a Confederate counterattack drove them back. Those two regiments were among the hardest hit of the day, each losing about half its men. The 37th Illinois and 26th Indiana then went up the hill into the apple orchard, outnumbered, and fell back to a fence line in the valley.
