Generals Blunt and Herron
Prairie Grove, Washington County · Arkansas
Two men who arrived by different roads. James Blunt, born in Maine in 1826, was a physician who joined the Free State fight in Kansas and rose to major general; at Honey Springs in 1863 the First Kansas Colored Infantry fought under him. Francis Herron, born in Pittsburgh in 1837, was 25 at Prairie Grove, was chosen with McPherson and Logan to lead the procession into Vicksburg, and received the Medal of Honor for Pea Ridge. In 1873 Blunt was accused of conspiring to defraud the government and the Cherokees. Herron became a New Orleans marshal.
