Washington County Cane Hill College
Cane Hill, Washington County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
A free university in Fayetteville helped end this college. Cane Hill's Cumberland Presbyterians opened a school in 1835, the legislature chartered it as a college in 1852, and a brick building went up in 1858. In the war the dormitory survived as a Union hospital while other town buildings burned. Arson destroyed the college in 1885, a new building opened in 1886, and the free classes of Arkansas Industrial University, open at Fayetteville since 1871, helped close it around 1891. The 1886 building stands today, listed on the National Register in 1982 and restored in 2017.
