Site of Parrott Granite Block

This block was built twice. Its granite was cut and fitted in Canton province, taken down, and shipped with the men who would put it up again, the missionary William Speer wrote in 1870. In 1852 those Chinese stonemasons stopped work on John Parrott's building for higher pay, a walkout labor historians list as the earliest recorded strike by Chinese workers in the country. The three-story block came through the fire of 1906 and was pulled down in 1926 for the tower that stands here now. Nothing marks the corner.
