Salt Lake & Utah RR/Utah Idaho Sugar Factory
West Jordan, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by SUP, 1990
For thirty years an electric train ran through here. The Salt Lake & Utah Railroad — the "Orem Line," named for its financiers — opened in 1914 and by 1916 sent two dozen trains a day down the west side of the valley, sixty-seven miles from Salt Lake City through West Jordan to Payson. Its dark-red cars carried passengers and freight where automobiles hadn't yet reached. Then they did. The car bled the line dry; the last run came in 1946, and the rails were pulled up for scrap where FrontRunner traces part of the same route.
