Air Pirates Memorial
West Jordan, Salt Lake County · Utah
The 211th Aviation Regiment flies Apaches out of West Jordan's airfield, and this memorial in Veterans Memorial Park belongs to that unit. Chief Warrant Officers James Linder and Clayton Barnes — both Afghanistan veterans — died on August 20, 2007, when their AH-64 crashed near Fairfield on a night training flight. Linder lived blocks from the hangars; Barnes was due to start dental school the next morning. Their fellow pilots built this monument, its plaque signing the two off as Air Pirates, with a line that explains why: a man is not dead until he is forgotten.
