Old Brickyard Chimney
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected, 1993
This lone brick chimney is all that's left of what was once the largest brickworks in the West. The Salt Lake Pressed Brick Company fired as many as 60,000 bricks a day here, on land an English immigrant named Edward Hemsley had christened simply 'The Brickyard'—Brigham Young reportedly canceled Hemsley's mission so he'd stay home and keep making brick. The plant shut down in 1972 and was hauled off to West Jordan, all but this 1902 smokestack, left standing among the shops of Brickyard Plaza like a chimney with no house.
