First Millcreek Ward Chapel
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1971
Millcreek's Latter-day Saints began their first chapel in February 1866, under builder Ruben G. Miller — a sturdy box of adobe on a sandstone footing, sand-plastered and painted to mimic cut stone. Inside it stayed frontier-plain: worshippers sat on bare planks laid over sawn logs, lit by kerosene lamps and warmed by a single sheet-iron stove. Wilford Woodruff dedicated the finished building in 1876, a full decade after the first shovel. Nothing of it survives today — the plaque came down around 2022, and condominiums now cover the ground.
