Mount Olivet Civil War Cannon
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected, 2003
Not everything in a historic cemetery is old. This cannon was placed at Mount Olivet in 2003—well over a century after the war it commemorates—among the graves of the Union soldiers buried here. There's something telling in the date: the Civil War generation was long gone, yet someone still felt the pull to mark them with a weapon of their era, iron and deliberate, aimed at nothing. It's a reminder that remembrance isn't a single act but a habit later generations keep choosing to renew.
