Keith M. Engar
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA
Keith Engar built a professional theatre out of a university drama program. When he took over Pioneer Memorial Theatre in 1964, campus productions were student affairs; he negotiated the first formal contract between a university theatre and the Actors' Equity Association, opening the stage to professionals. That agreement set the model that made the building beside this marker the fully professional Pioneer Theatre Company — still Salt Lake's only Equity house, still staging a full season every year. Engar's insistence that Utah could support serious theatre proved right — seven plays a season, ever since.
