David O. McKay
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA
Before he led a church, David O. McKay taught school. Raised on a Huntsville farm, he trained as a teacher and served as a principal before rising to become the ninth president of the Latter-day Saint church in 1951 — a tenure of nearly two decades, and one of the most beloved in the faith's history. His hand reached into public life across Utah, including here: in 1962 McKay helped dedicate Pioneer Memorial Theatre as the "State Theatre of Utah," tying this modern stage back to the pioneer playhouse Brigham Young had built downtown a century before.
