Modjeska's Home
Modjeska Canyon, Orange County · California
Erected by California State Park Commission
Modjeska reached California in 1876 with her husband, Charles Bozenta Chlapowski, and a party of friends to farm a colony at Anaheim. It failed within a year, and the failure made her: she learned English and spent two decades touring American stages with her husband beside her. The earnings came back to this canyon. In 1888 Stanford White designed the gabled white cottage she named Arden, for the forest of As You Like It, on an estate that once ran to 1,340 acres; the county park keeps 14.4. The house is seen by reservation only.
