Flores Peak
Modjeska Canyon, Orange County · California
The printed panel facing the peak tells a legend: a hundred riders, and Flores alone leaping the cliff on horseback. The posses that cornered the gang here were led by Californios, Andrés Pico and Tomás Sánchez, and Flores rode down the slope with two others, was caught and escaped again. Pico hanged two captives on the spot. A public meeting voted Flores's death, and he was hanged in Los Angeles on February 14, 1857. Eleven more suspected men were lynched by the end of 1858, most by the El Monte Boys. No state plaque stands.
