The Serrano Adobe
Lake Forest, Orange County · California
The bronze honours the grantee in the name of the family that ended up with his house. José Serrano was granted Cañada de los Alisos in 1842 and built this adobe about 1863, the year the drought began that killed his herds; foreclosure gave the rancho to the banker J. S. Slauson. Dwight Whiting bought it in 1884, and in 1932 his son George remodelled the adobe, adding a dining room, bedroom and kitchen. That is the restoration the plaque dates. The register still calls the house private living quarters; it has been a county park since 1981.
