Little River County Seat
Ashdown, Little River County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
The Arkansas legislature created Little River County on March 5, 1867, out of parts of Sevier and Hempstead. Its first courthouse and jail stood near Alleene, on land owned by the first sheriff, William M. Freeman, and in 1868 Governor Powell Clayton had the county records moved to Rocky Comfort. The seat then kept moving. Richmond took it in 1880. In 1902 it went to Foreman, the railroad depot town that residents called New Rocky Comfort, and an election in 1906 chose Ashdown, where the present courthouse was finished in 1907.
