Home of Governor Jeff Davis
Ashdown, Little River County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
Jeff Davis was born in 1862 near Rocky Comfort to a Baptist preacher who was also a lawyer and county judge, and he was named for the Confederate president. As attorney general he sued every fire insurance company in the state, and in 1900 he carried 74 of 75 counties in the governor's primary. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas calls him a race-baiter. In October 1905, with Theodore Roosevelt in Little Rock, he spent most of his welcoming speech defending lynching. He served in the Senate from 1907 until a stroke killed him in January 1913.
