The Museum of Regional History at 219 North State Line Avenue is run by the Texarkana Museums System. It occupies the Offenhauser Insurance Building, built in 1879 and described as the oldest brick building in the city, and the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The museum calls itself Texarkana's first and oldest museum.
Its story starts with the Caddo. The collections include Caddo jewelry, pottery and tools, then run through early Spanish and French explorers, agriculture, industry, railroads, World War II and the civil rights movement. A music collection features Scott Joplin, Huddie Ledbetter, known as Leadbelly, and the composer Conlon Nancarrow, and includes one of Joplin's pianos. Another exhibit covers Texas Congressman Wright Patman. The Wilbur Smith Research Library and Archives holds photographs, rare books, the Texarkana city directory collection and Pioneer History files.
The museum's site lists hours of Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A 2021 newspaper listing gave admission as $5 per person, with children 3 and under free, so check the current price at (903) 793-4831. The Ace of Clubs House, another property of the museums system, was closed for renovation at last report and opens for occasional ticketed tours.
