Confederate Camp at Richmond
Richmond, Little River County · Arkansas
Erected 2012
The soldiers camped at Richmond were what remained of Sterling Price's raid into Missouri. Price meant to gather recruits and supplies, disrupt Federal communications and, if he could, take St. Louis. He fought several pitched battles without coming close to the city. At Westport, the largest battle in the Trans-Mississippi, and again at Mine Creek in Kansas, he was beaten, and the Encyclopedia of Arkansas says his army was nearly destroyed. Price returned to Arkansas and set up his headquarters at Laynesport, in Little River County.
