Little Diamond Battle- Battle of Diamond Fork
Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah County · Utah
Erected, 2008
By 1866 the Black Hawk War had a logic: settlers had taken the Utes' land, the Utes raided the cattle that had replaced their game, and the militia gave chase. On June 26 a Ute party led by Mountain — a Colorado chief and ally of Black Hawk — drove off livestock near Mapleton and pushed up Maple Canyon into these mountains. Militiamen caught them at Diamond Fork and cut off the escape, and in the crossfire that followed several Utes and two settlers, Albert Dimmick and John Edmundson, were killed. The Utes slipped away, leaving the cattle behind.
