Springville Presbyterian Church

Springville, Utah County · Utah
Erected by USHS

Springville's Presbyterians came to teach as much as to preach. The Reverend George Leonard founded a church and mission school here in 1877, and beside it rose the Hungerford Academy — for years the only school in town offering an education from the early grades through high school, open to families of every faith. This church, built in 1892 next to the academy, is a graceful piece of late Gothic Revival with a Romanesque bell tower, its original stained glass still in place. It has held Presbyterian worship without a break ever since.

What the plaque says

In 1877 the Rev. George Leonard established a Presbyterian Church and Mission School in Springville. In 1892-1893, this church was built just south of the Presbyterian Hungerford Academy, the only school then providing education from elementary grades through high school for all denominations. This church is an example of the late Gothic Revival Style with a Romanesque Revival bell tower. The stained glass windows are part of the original structure. This building has served as a Presbyterian Church continuously since its construction.
