George Edward Wahlen Memorial
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
George Wahlen was a Navy corpsman on Iwo Jima, and what he did there is almost hard to believe. Wounded repeatedly over days of fighting, he kept crawling to treat other wounded Marines, refusing evacuation until he physically could not go on, and earned the Medal of Honor for it. He came home to Utah and lived a long, quiet life. This memorial honors him; the VA hospital in Ogden carries his name. He's among the most decorated Utahns ever to serve, and among the least self-regarding.
