Emmeline Wells Bust
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1928
Emmeline B. Wells is the woman Utah chose to honor in bronze — and for good reason. For nearly forty years she edited the Woman's Exponent, one of the early West's most important women's newspapers; she campaigned for suffrage and saw Utah women win the vote; and she led the Relief Society, the vast Latter-day Saint women's organization, into her nineties. This bust remembers her. In a state whose public monuments lean heavily male and ecclesiastical, Wells stands out — a reminder that Utah women were enfranchised decades before the nation caught up.
