Early Settlers of Tooele County
Tooele City, Tooele County · Utah
Erected by DUP, 1934
Tooele County starts with a single September campsite. On September 18, 1849, the first families pitched here: Judson and Sarah Tolman with their baby Nancy, Josiah and Henrietta Call with young Cyril, and Samuel and Sarah Meacham. More came before the year was out — Cyrus Tolman's family in October, then in late December the Bravetts, the Rowberrys, Robert Skelton, and others — a trickle of households that would become a county. This monument marks the spot of that first camp, naming the people who chose to winter on open ground and stay. Everything in Tooele grew from here.
