Overton Building

Before California had a capitol it had this. Read and Company put the building up in 1852 for a hundred and five thousand dollars, and the state moved in above the banking floor: the governor's office, the secretary of state, and from 1853 to 1856 the first California State Library on the second storey. A government ran out of rented rooms. The building came down in the 1960s and the ground is a parking lot now. Nothing on it suggests the state was ever here at all.
