A Wonderful Piece of Engineering: The Mullan Road
Saltese, Mineral County · Montana
The panel quotes a Randall Hewett, and the man it means spelled his name Hewitt. In 1862 his uncle, Christopher C. Hewitt, a newly appointed judge, led a party from Fort Hall to Spokane over part of the Mullan Road, and Randall kept a journal. He crossed the Point of Rocks near Alberton on September 10 and reached the Big Side Cut the next day. He published the account in 1906 as Across the Plains and Over the Divide, with advice on choosing a road: take either, and halfway through you would wish for the other.
