Land of the Schitsu'umsh (Schitsu'umshu'lmkhw)
Shoshone County · Idaho
The shrinking was done on paper. The 1873 reservation kept some 598,000 acres, Lake Coeur d'Alene included, and promised a mill, a blacksmith shop, a school, farm tools and $170,000 for more than four million acres given up, but without Congress the agreement could neither pay for the land nor give the tribe title. On September 9, 1889, a commission bought the northern third, with most of the lake, for $500,000, to be divided among the roughly 500 Schitsu'umsh left after smallpox. Congress ratified it, with an unratified 1887 agreement, on March 3, 1891.
