Historical Marker · No. 1033
Willow Creek Slide
Shoshone County · Idaho
It happened on February 10, 1903, at the S Bridge, an 839-foot curving Northern Pacific trestle above Mullan. A rotary snowplow train, stalled by a breakdown, had stopped on the trestle in the night while its crew dug out by hand, leaving a pusher engine and a caboose on the open span when the slide hit. Seven men were asleep in the caboose; eight people were aboard the passenger car left hanging from its coupler. Nobody died. The Barnard studio in Wallace photographed the wreck, and its glass-plate negatives survive at the University of Idaho.
