Schitsu'umsh
Shoshone County · Idaho
The name is in the tribe's own language, Snchitsu'umshtsn, and much of that language survives through one family. Lawrence Nicodemus spoke only Coeur d'Alene when he entered boarding school at nine; with his mother and grandmother he worked with the linguist Gladys Reichard in the late 1920s, and in 1975 he published a self-study course, a two-volume dictionary and cassette tapes. Gaming revenue let the tribe start a language program in 1994, and Nicodemus, then in his eighties, helped build high-school and college courses before he died in 2004.
