A Lost World
Saltese, Mineral County · Montana
The panel's lost world has no animals in it, and these rocks may hold a tenant after all. The geologist Robert Horodyski found strings of tiny beads on bedding planes of the Appekunny Formation, a Belt unit in Glacier National Park roughly 1.48 billion years old. In 2000 Ellis Yochelson and Mikhail Fedonkin named them Horodyskia moniliformis and argued they were a multicellular organism. Others have read them as clumps of clay or a lichen-like partnership. Similar strings have since turned up in Australia, India and China, and nobody yet agrees what they were.
