Utah World War I Pagoda Memorial
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
This open stone rotunda—eight columns ringing a central shaft, with no dome, so the sky pours straight down into it—is the oldest monument in Memory Grove, and the reason the park exists at all. The women of Utah's Service Star Legion, many of them Gold Star mothers, pushed the city to set this canyon mouth aside as a memorial after the Great War; the park was dedicated in 1924. The bronze plaques around the shaft carry the names of Utah's World War I dead.
