U.S.S. Utah Veterans Memorial
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
The USS Utah was a battleship that carried the state's name to the Navy — and she never left Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, Japanese torpedoes capsized her at her moorings, and 58 of her crew died; unlike most of the fleet, she was never salvaged. Her rusting hull still lies in the harbor today, a war grave alongside the better-known Arizona. This memorial remembers the ship and her dead — a tangible thread between a landlocked desert state and the morning that pulled the country into a world war.
