Twentieth Ward School
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by DUP, 1965
Salt Lake City's Twentieth Ward built its school in 1857, one big room by the hand of John Toone that served, as such rooms did, for classes, church, and recreation all at once — with a two-story addition following in 1860. Pupils came to it from across the valley and beyond. In 1892 it gave way to a proper eighteen-classroom school named Lowell, and when fire took that building in 1960, another rose to replace it. Three schools deep, the site has taught the neighborhood's children for well over a century and a half.
