First Presbyterian Church
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1973
The Presbyterians were among the Protestant churches that followed the railroad into Utah, coming to teach and to preach in a territory dominated by another faith. Their Salt Lake congregation raised this church between 1903 and 1906, an English Gothic Revival building of local red sandstone designed by the architect Walter Ware. Its pointed arches and rugged stone brought a note of the old country's parish churches to the western city. The Presbyterians' schools would also give Utah one of its lasting institutions, the college that became Westminster.
