Tithing Office
Brigham City, Box Elder County · Utah
You could pay your tithing here in butter, eggs, or a live calf. Built in 1877 under the tithing clerk Peter Madsen, this brick office received a tenth of what Box Elder's farmers produced, and its ground-floor rooms held the perishable tithes — cheese, meat, dairy — while a rock wall ringed the yard to keep the donated animals from wandering off. Church offices filled the upper floor; a baptismal font sat in the basement. When cash replaced produce, the building lost its purpose; a family later bought it and rebuilt it lower and wider.
