Box Elder Courthouse
Brigham City, Box Elder County · Utah
Brigham City's first public building went up the hard way. Begun in 1855, it lost its half-built adobe walls to a windstorm in 1857 and had to be raised again — then Lorenzo Snow asked the builder James Pett for a roof that would last, and Pett framed one with wooden pegs and horse hide, no nails. For decades the courthouse did everything: drama, church, school, county business. Its tower bell rang work, lunch, and quitting time for the town's cooperative. A 1910 remodel wrapped the original in a grander front, leaving it the rear wing.
