Brigham City Archway Sign
Brigham City, Box Elder County · Utah
Brigham City's arch was an act of local boosterism, and it still spans Main Street. After the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge opened west of town, a businessman named J. E. Ryan pushed for a welcome sign; residents covered all but two hundred dollars of the $2,400 cost themselves. Hoisted into place in September 1928 and dedicated during the Peach Days harvest festival, it stretched thirty-three feet, painted with wild ducks and lit by more than three hundred bulbs, proclaiming Brigham the gateway to the world's greatest game bird refuge.
