The Testimony of Three Witnesses
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1927
Bound into the front of every Book of Mormon is a short statement signed by three men — Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris — swearing they had seen the golden plates from which Joseph Smith said he translated it. This 1927 monument, by the sculptor Avard Fairbanks, honors that testimony. The detail history keeps is the harder one: all three men eventually broke with the church Smith founded — and yet none of them ever recanted what they said they saw.
