Hyrum Smith
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1911
Hyrum Smith was the older brother of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter-day Saint movement, and he died beside him — both shot by a mob at Carthage Jail, Illinois, on June 27, 1844. A bronze statue of Hyrum, sculpted by Brigham Young's grandson Mahonri Young as one of a pair with Joseph, was placed on Temple Square in 1911, on the anniversary of the brothers' deaths. Remembered as the Patriarch to Joseph's Prophet, Hyrum is the quieter figure in a movement whose story rarely slows down.
